Review of Trend AntiVirus 2010 (Version 17.5): Trend Micro AntiVirus was one of the top-rated Antivirus programs a few years ago. But in recent years there have been few changes with Trend's Antivirus software - letting it fall behind its competition. Let's see if the 2010 version reverses this "trend"...1) Installation: Trend Micro AntiVirus 2010 installed in just 85 seconds and required no reboots after installation. The step-by-step Wizard made the whole installation quick and easy, although some customization during the install process could better tailor the program for the user it's being installed for. 2) Features & Ease of Use: Trend 2010 is still very similar to the 2005 version which was one of the top-rated Antivirus programs of its time. But the year is 2010, not 2005. Trend Micro's user-interface is very easy to use, however, it is verging on being too simplistic compared to its competition. It doesn't offer many of the bells & whistles that many other Antivirus programs offer these days (such as PC Maintenance & Monitoring Tools, Bot protection, Phishing protection, advanced reports & graphs, and other Advanced Features & Options). Users want more out of their Antivirus program these days than just Virus/Malware protection - advanced features that Trend Micro Antivirus 2010 fails to deliver. Features Checklist:
3) Virus Scanner: Trend Micro has 3 scanning options similar to most other Antivirus programs: Quick Scan, Full System Scan, and Custom Scan. On our test computer it took Trend Micro 105 seconds to perform its Quick Scan, while further testing found Trend's Virus Scanner performed a Full System Scan at a pace of 14.5 MB/s, which translates into scanning 50GB of used hard-drive space in 59 minutes. This was one of the slowest Virus Scanners that we tested this year. Updates: Trend Micro only releases between 1-2 updates/day to new threats. This is well behind industry leader Norton AntiVirus which releases over 200 updates per day. 4) Performance Testing:
5) Effectiveness: (Virus/Malware Detection) ![]() 6) Help & Support: Trend Micro's support is very thorough. They have an extensive online Knowledge Base, Free Email Support, Free Chat, and Free Phone Support - which not many Antivirus vendors offer anymore. We tested Trend's email support and received an answer 80 minutes later. The email reply was prompt and answered our question very well. CONCLUSION: Trend Micro hasn't changed much over the last few years. What was once a top-rated Antivirus program, now has fallen behind its competition. Users want more out of their Antivirus software these days than just Virus/Malware protection - features that Trend fails to deliver. Trend Micro Antivirus is unfortunately an example of a program that got complacent when it was one of the best Antivirus programs a few years ago. But with few changes, Trend Micro can no longer be considered part of this elite group.
