AVG AntiVirus Version 8.5 Review
June 5, 2009 by AntivirusWare.
AVG is another big name in the free Antivirus market - arguably the biggest name of them all. Our review of AVG Antivirus was our final Anti-Virus software review in our 2009 testing - and it was one of the worst Antivirus programs in our Top 10 testing this year - finishing 9th overall.
So what was wrong with AVG 8.5 this year? For one, a good Antivirus program should be effective in keeping your computer safe from Viruses and Malware — but AVG only scored 1 out of 3 stars in AV Comparatives testing this year. This is one of the poorest results in the testing — not exactly reassuring to leave AVG in charge of your computer’s protection.
In our Antivirus Performance Testing AVG also was near the bottom finishing 8th overall (3rd worst!) in the 10 programs we tested. Especially worrying in our testing was that it added 21 seconds to the reboot time once installed on your computer - the WORST that we tested. AVG did install fairly quickly (110s), but its scan time was 3rd slowest and its updates per day were less than 3 times… both near the bottom in our testing. (See Screenshots of AVG Antivirus)
So our conclusion? If you’re going to use AVG - steer clear of its paid version as its not worth the investment - if you’re looking for a better alternative try reading our ESET Nod32 Antivirus Review, Norton Antivirus Review, or Kaspersky Antivirus Review.
