Microsoft and RSA Partner To Prevent Data Loss
January 5, 2009 by AntivirusWare.Microsoft, along with EMC’s RSA, announced an expanded technology partnership on December 4. The partnership will focus on digital rights management within the enterprise.
There are two parts to the announcement. The first part, according to Douglas Leland, general manager of the Identity and Security Business Group at Microsoft, reveals an agreement by Microsoft to build RSA’s Data Loss Prevention (DLP) prevention classification into the Microsoft Information Technology platform and future information protection products.
The second part of the announcement focuses on the plan for RSA, in turn, to integrate Microsoft’s Active Directory Right Management System (RMS) into its DLP product. ”
According to Microsoft and EMC, their solution is different from other DLP solutions on the market. The difference lies in the fact that it is thoroughly integrated into the platform rather than layered on after the fact. Microsoft will start by adding RSA’s DLP 6.5 to Windows Server 2008, and fully integrating it into the OS. Microsoft will include other products in the program. These include Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint.
The process is completely transparent for the user, and happens entirely on the back end. The technology will make it so that the user doesn’t have to make a choice as to what information they have to protect. Whenever sensitive documents are traded using Exchange or SharePoint, the policy as to who can read it, write to it, print, or not print the document will be set automatically by policies set by the CIO or other security officers in firms using the software.
