The New Generation of Trojans
November 9, 2008 by Antivirus Ware.comIf you simply pay attention to software reviews, and use proven, well known software like Norton Anti-Virus, you will avoid most of the pitfalls of Trojan horse malware. This will stop most infections from taking over your computer. It will also stop you from allowing virus programs masquerading as antivirus software, such as Antivirus 2009, to invade your computer. However, there are even more insidious threats out there that may threaten not only your computer, but also other gadgets you own.
Mobile phone viruses have been around long enough to be passé. However, did you know that viruses, spyware and malware can hijack legitimate sites to infect your computer and steal your vital information? In July 2008, Sony’s PlayStation site was attacked by a SQL ‘injection’—an attack that redirected visitors to Sony’s site to a malicious site that asked them to download a fake virus scanner—which would later ask for their credit card number.
This form of Trojan Horse virus, the SQL injection, is a form of attack that uses malicious code to infest legitimate websites in attacks like the Sony attack. In the Sony case, some Sony customers were duped into believing that the software was legit and recommended by Sony, and they were ripped off. It hasn’t been limited to Sony either—BusinessWeek was hit by a SQL injection too. In this case, malware from a Russian web server was foisted on unsuspecting BusinessWeek customers, leading them to potentially download more malware.
