Network Security: Whose Responsibility Is It Anyway?

October 10, 2008 by Antivirus Ware.com

A network can be as simple as several computers connected together by a common drive or server or as complex as many computers, servers, drives and other equipment. No matter the size or type of a network, security is an integral part of the network. Responsibility for the network is more than the network administrator’s charge.

As a network user, you are responsible for the network’s security within your range of use of the network. This means that you, the individual user, should take care not to transfer, upload or download files that could introduce a virus into the network. You are also responsible for maintaining the specified guidelines for using the network. Perhaps you are periodically required to reduce the number of files you keep on the network. This may not seem like a big deal but it is. Too many files can bombard the network, creating bottlenecks and congestion that compromise the network’s ability to maintain its security.

If you are responsible for maintaining a network that you have created which has only a few users, security remains an issue to be addressed regularly. Make sure your users follow the same routines for the manner in which files are placed on the server or drive. Require all users to maintain up-to-date virus security software on each computer. Perform the necessary maintenance and upgrades to the network to keep it running optimally. Be sure to keep users informed of network changes. Protect your network by regularly backing up to tape.
