Because there are certain risks associated with making purchasing online as compared to purchasing by mail or over the telephone, one needs to understand the fundamental difference between the types of purchasing and how to make online purchases as safely as possible. This understanding comes with the awareness than no transaction online is without a small risk, just like purchasing other ways. So how do you protect your purchasing information online? First, make sure you are familiar with the seller and their site’s security sockets for handling your transaction. Many online companies have an option for making your purchase by mail or over the telephone if you are not comfortable with inputting your financial information into the computer.

If you are dealing with an individual seller through a web site that allows reselling, bidding and similar options, it is your responsibility to investigate not only the seller but the item being sold. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of the site and know what your rights. Typically, the site is not responsible for delivery or condition of the goods and services received.

The price you pay for an online purchase can be more than the dollars and cents paid if you are the unfortunate recipient of a con or scam artist. Consider PayPal or any other reputable intermediary to conduct transactions. Be sure to thoroughly investigate and when it doubt, decline to make the purchase. When a purchase sounds too good to be true, chances are it’s not!
