If you’ve ever experienced a home invasion or theft of your personal belongings, you already understand how hackers operate. A hacker is one who intentionally violates, disturbs, or otherwise breaks into your computer to steal information or plant a virus. Internet thieves, known as hackers, are responsible for some of the major computer security breaches known today. Some major banks and other financial institutions have had their systems hacked and had to report to their clients that their confidential information has been compromised.

In other words, hackers don’t ask permission to use your computer and just like career criminals make their living committing crimes professional hackers spend considerable time and resources breaking into some of the most sophisticated systems in the world. And while it may of serious concern about the attacks on such systems, it should be of more concern about the safety of your own computer.

It is important to understand that no computer system is 100% safe from being hacked. This is not a cause for panic however, since there are measures you can take to increase your computer’s safety and avoid being hacked. Keep these easy steps in mind:

(1) Have proper antivirus and firewall software on your computer.

(2) Never provide personal information such as social security number, telephone, address, or credit card numbers to an unknown source.

(3) Maintain adequate security on your browser that encrypts your information.

(4) Check for security certificates and secure sockets on websites where you decide to conduct business such as purchases.

(5) When in doubt, don’t do it!
