Once upon a time, the only way to receive a letter was by the traditional post office. Thanks to the Internet, electronic mail (e-mail) allows you to send a receive mail from anywhere in the world that has an Internet connection. E-mail is a part of your electronic post office, where you can do a variety of things. There are several kinds of e-mail accounts you can have. Perhaps the most popular e-mail account is one that is web-based. This means your account resides with the provider online. For example, Yahoo provides free e-mail accounts to those who register.

In exchange for registering, Yahoo and many others similar, provide storage space on their servers so that you can keep sent and received messages, files and other information. Similar to a traditional post office, you have settings controls that allow you to determine how you want your mail to be sent and received, what type of font you wish to use, what security measures you want to use to protect your privacy and sometimes even stationary to decorate your outgoing messages.

Like a traditional post office, there are some actions that cannot be reversed and should be taken with care. Sending email is like mailing a letter, once it is sent, it cannot be retrieved. The contents of your email may be read by someone other than to whom you are sending them thus discretion should always be exercised. Take the time to clear out your e-mail account to avoid clutter.
