A Brief Overview of Secure Operating Systems

When you’re discussing the concept of computer security, the terminology usually refers to the technology that implements a secure operating system.  Science developed a majority of this technology during the 1980’s but of course, technological advancements continue, thus enabling individuals to protect their PC’s to the optimum levels possible.  Though the original technology is still valid, it sees limited use anymore because it mandates changes to a system’s management.  Additionally, it is just not the well understood except by the proponents who utilize it in remote numbers.

 

The technology of the ultra-strong security systems employs what is called operating system kernel technology, which enables and guarantees that security policies are strictly enforced in any operating system environment.  For the sake of the past history of pc security, a great example of a security policy is the Bell-LaPadula model which was developed by David Elliott Bell and Len LaPadula in 1973.

 

The model was a way to formalize and implement a multi-level security policy for the US Department of Defense.  The strategy coupled microprocessor hardware features with operating system “kernels” using memory manage units to make it function.  This enabled the foundation for a secure operating system which ensured the impossibility of penetration from hostile environments.

 

There is not only a security policy imposed by this system, but it also has the capability to protect itself from any attacks and corruption as well.  Ordinary operating systems typically do not have this type of security in place.  A determined, logical, and precise method is necessary in order to produce these types of systems.
