The Technology Involved with Secure Operating Systems

One of the referents of computer security is the technologies that are used in order to implement secure operating systems. The developmental stages of these technologies date back to the 1980’s and during that time, we saw some of the most impenetrable systems ever created. Despite its current limited use, it is still valid, not only because of the imposition of changes to a system’s management, but also because the overall understanding of the technology is so limited in programming circles. The “operating system kernel”, or central component, is the technology that ensures the absolute enforcement of security policies within an operating environment.

The more impenetrable operating systems are based on this technology. The Bell-LaPadula model, which was developed and used in the early 1970’s in order to formulate a multi-level security policy for the US Department of Defense, is just one example of a computer security policy. This particular model operates by virtue of coupling a specially implemented operating system kernel to specialized microprocessor hardware features and oftentimes involves the memory management system itself.

The foundation for a secure operating system is then formed and therefore ensures that penetration by hostile elements is virtually impossible. This of course is reliant on the premise that certain critical components to the system have been designed and implemented correctly. Since the configuration imposes a specific security policy to enable these capabilities, it is theorized that the configuration also protects itself from any breeches or corruptions.
