Many people think that large corporations are impervious to the attacks of hackers. Not so, last week hackers hijacked Comcast’s corporate web portal for several hours leaving the company’s 14.1 million subscribers without access to their e-mail, news and technical support.

On Wednesday May 28th, just before 11 p.m. the front page of Comcast.net went down and was left with a simple and cryptic message that read RoXed. The company quickly scrambled to get their users back online and by Thursday morning the company had for the most part reversed the hijacking. Many users still were still left without access to Comcast.net and their web based e-mail, but that was also fixed by the close of business Thursday.

Comcast is confident that no sensitive information was compromised in the attack that was perpetrated by two teenagers aged 18 and 19. The teens who go by the pseudonyms ‘Defiant” and “EBK” said they hijacked Comcast by taking control of the register account at Network solutions and redirecting traffic to other servers.

The teens maintain that they did not hack the system to steal user names or passwords. They claim they did it because they were angry with Comcast over their poor service. Additionally, they claim that they called Comcast’s technical support to warn them and that they were dismissed and hung up on. The teens are expected to be arrested for the attack.
