The popular download site TorrentSpy.com shut down months ago, but earlier this month a federal judge ordered the website to pay $111 million dollars in damages to movie studies. The decision was based on the fact that the website was found guilty of copyright-infringement for allowing users to download bittorrents from its peer to peer site.
The judgment was entered as a default judgment after TorrentSpy because they were accused of destroying evidence related to the case. They were ordered to keep server logs, user IP addresses and other information that would have been relevant to the case and they ignored that order. The company has also filed for bankruptcy.
The movie industry believes that this judgment sends out a strong message to the public about the illegality of these sites. The ultimate demise of TorrentSpy, which was one of the larger more well-known torrent sites, demonstrates that piracy will not be tolerated and the laws of copyright will be enforced.
The MPAA plans to vigorously pursue organizations and individuals who continue to operate sites like TorrentSpy and their users. However, with underground sites and ghost owners new torrent sites continue to come and go daily making prosecution of many of these site owners an elusive possibility.
