Everywhere you [go] these days you see people using their smart phones for a variety of tasks. It seems now that may not be the wisest idea. A recent study showed that smart phones are more vulnerable to breaches in security than laptops.
The survey of over 300 senior IT staff was conducted by endpoint data protection supplier Credent Technologies. The survey showed that an astounding 94 percent of IT staff fear that PDAs could be an internet security risk.
The IT staff surveyed listed many reasons for their concern over smart phone security. The primary danger they listed was the failure by many executives to use a password on their smart phones. Nine out of ten smart phones do not have extra security and no user restrictions were put in place for 80 percent of the phones.
For an individual looking to steal a mobile device to gain access to sensitive information the smart phone is an ideal pick. It is smaller, easier to conceal and often goes unnoticed when it is initially missing. It is much easier to steal a smart phone than it is to steal a laptop, simply for size alone. Additionally, because laptops have been around longer, users have placed more security on them to protect their information should a theft occur.
