Messenger LogoWith such a heavy focus on protecting our e-mail and Internet activity many network managers are over looking the open threat of IM (instant messenger) in the office. An astounding 85 percent of offices in North America report IM use among employees. New studies show that worms and viruses coming in through IM is growing at a rapid pace. Last year alone there was a 20 percent increase in IM attacks.

An estimated 90 percent of offices lack any form of IM protection or control. This can leave those companies open to threats, information leakages and legal liabilities. In fact, many companies are not even aware that there is an existing IM threat.

There are three simple steps a company can take to ensure they are protected against IM threats. First, they can ban the use of IM in the office if it is not used for a business function. Next, if it is used internally, companies can use an internal IM program rather than having employees use one of the free services available on the Internet. Finally, use an antivirus program that has an IM management tool.

All of these things can be easily implemented into any workplace with the simple formation of new office policy and practice.
