It is important to have a firewall up and running on your computer, but you only need one. Many people don’t realize that they automatically have a firewall running through Windows and when they install a third party protection program like Norton or McAfee they add that firewall as well. The third party firewall is usually a safer bet over the Windows firewall that comes with your computer.
When you install a third party computer protection program on your computer you will need to disable Windows firewall and enable that program’s firewall. To do this, you will need to open the Windows firewall controls from your control panel and click the radio button off so that it is not running. Then, you will install the third party firewall according to the program’s instructions. Go into the program’s control panel and locate the firewall controls to ensure that it is enabled. Make sure that you have selected the network code that best describes your computer. This means setting it as personal, work, etc.
After you have checked that your firewall is active and labeled correctly, save the changes that you have made and exit the program. When you close the program make sure that you check your system tray on the bottom right hand corner of your screen for the firewall icon. It should be there to indicate that it is in fact running in the background.
