When you are online frequently and you take part in a lot of online transactions identity theft is a huge concern. Concern over identity theft is not unwarranted; in 2005 alone 8.3 million Americans fell victim to identity theft. Over 85 percent of the 8.3 million people who were victimized reported that the theft involved misuse of their existing accounts including e-mail, credit card, banking, medical insurance and various Internet payment accounts.
E-mail accounts are a prime target for hackers looking to steal your information. Your e-mail account contains links and information relating to all of your online accounts. We send a mass of important documents, faxes and contact sensitive information through our e-mail, and hackers looking to steal our information have many ways to exploit that vulnerability.
There are many ways that you can protect your e-mail account from hackers. First, never save password information in your e-mail box. Create a high, medium and low security password that you can remember without having to save it. Next, save e-mails that contain sensitive information on an external hard drive and delete the original copy from your e-mail box. Additionally, never send sensitive information through e-mail and delete all sensitive e-mail that you no longer need. Also, be sure you have up-to-date virus protection software on your computer. Finally, consider setting up a hacker alarm on your e-mail box for added protection.
