The website for the Phoenix Mars Lander had to be taken down after it was hacked recently. The website’s lead blog entry was replaced by a message that read “hacked by VITAL” and it redirected visitors of the site to a third party site. The hacked page credited to hackers going by the pseudonyms of Blaster and Cr@zy_king with the attack.

The hackers took over the Phoenix Mars Lander’s public web page and changed it’s leading news story to a link that directed traffic to an overseas website. The site has been taken down temporarily while technical experts work to correct the problem that was created by the hackers.

Phoenix Mars LanderThe site is just one of many sites that has fallen prey to similar attacks in recent months - just another reminder for internet users to have proper virus protection software on their computers. Other sites included in the attacks were the sites that belonged to the US Department of Homeland Security, the United Nations and the UK Civil Service. The sites were attacked using custom made web applications, not by exploiting weaknesses within the site’s existing system.

No reports of damage from the attack have been reported from users who were rerouted during the attack. Additionally, there is no evidence that users have been exposed to silent malware installations on their computer.
