Anyone who owns a Mac knows that getting updates for your web browser is rare. For the most part Macs are impervious to viruses and don’t require the constant updates that browsers like Internet Explorer do. However, recently Mac released an update for the computers powered by Mac OS X to fix 40 possible holes in the operating system and software that have the potential for breach.
The update by Mac comes just in time to protect users against a potential vulnerability in the Adobe Flash Player that is already being exploited on the Windows platform. The update will bring the Mac version of Flash Player up to speed with the latest version and this will protect users against sites that exploit the weaknesses in the older flash versions.
The current attack is solely designed to target Windows users, but the researcher who has discovered the weakness warns that the potential to attack Mac users is there. The issues for Mac involve flaws in the image file formats and can be easily exploited by simply getting a Mac user to click on a disguised malicious image.
Other security weaknesses in Mac were addressed during the patch including weaknesses in the iCal program that were discovered back in January.
