Review of Norton AntiVirus 2009: OVERVIEW: • Installation time less than 1 minute. • Slimmed down and fastest Norton version yet. • System Resource Usage are the best in the industry. • Norton Insight cuts scanning times by 80-90%. • Virus Definition Pulse Updates every 6 minutes on average    keeps your computer protected with the latest protection. • Overall Rating: Excellent! 1) Installation:   Norton AntiVirus 2009 has significantly improved its installation process. Previous versions would require you to reboot several times and it often took 15+ minutes to install Norton Antivirus. Now, Norton has streamlined the installation process. Our installation of Norton Antivirus 2009 took just 47 seconds and the computer was immediately ready for use. (See Installation Time Comparison Graph) 2) Features & Ease of Use:   Norton 2009 is configured so that once installed you can set it and forget it. Norton's new Smart Scheduler waits until your computer is idle before running tasks that consume system resources (like LiveUpdate, Quick Scan, and Full System Scan). Nortons Silent Mode won't interrupt your games, movies or presentations with messages that can wait. A good Antivirus program should be unnoticed by the user the majority of the time, and Norton 2009 does a very good job at not being noticed. 3) Virus Scanner:   Norton has both a Quick Scan and Full System Scan. On our test computer with 70GB of used space on its hard-drive it took Norton 24 seconds to perform its Quick Scan, while the Full System Scan took 49 minutes. Norton 2009 has a remedy to shorten the scan times to a more manageable level with its new Norton Insight. Norton Insight identifies trusted files on your computer that do not require scanning (Whitelisting), thus scanning times are greatly shortened. For example, on our test computer (70GB used space) with Norton Antivirus 2009 installed, a Full System Scan was reduced to just over 8 minutes from 49 minutes before Norton Insight was run - an 84% reduction in scanning time. This improvement puts Norton's scanning times at the top of its class with short and effective scans. A great improvement over the 2008 version. (See Scan Time Comparison Graph) Updates: With their 2008 version last year, Norton moved towards constant program updates & free upgrades while you have a current subscription. So, when next year's new version comes out you can upgrade at no additional cost as long as you have a current Norton Subscription. Also new in Norton 2009 is the Pulse Update feature that automatically downloads new Virus Definitions every 6 minutes on average (over 200 times per day). This new feature gives you the most up-to-date protection of any antivirus program available. (See Updates Per Day Comparison Graph) 4) System Resource Usage:   Norton Antivirus takes a dramatic leap forward in improving its System Resource Usage over previous Norton versions. Norton is head and shoulders above its competition with its new, slimmer Norton Antivirus 2009. View the results of the Antivirus tests we performed below... • Memory Use: Norton 2009 uses only 6.3 MB of memory. #1 rated of the 10 Antivirus programs tested. • Reboot Time: Norton added only 6.8 seconds to our test computer's reboot time. #1 rated of the 10 Antivirus programs tested. • Installation Size: Norton Antivirus 2009 takes 127 MB hard-drive space for installation. #2 rated of the 10 Antivirus programs tested - just behind Avast AntiVirus Pro. • Application Launch Time: Norton added 0.107s on average to launch a web browser. This was the 4th best result, and Norton's worst ranking in our Antivirus testing. • File Conversion Time: Norton added only 0.66s on average to convert a MP3 file to four other file types. #1 rated of the 10 Antivirus programs tested. • System Impact Score: The "System Impact Score" is a comparative score tallied from the above 5 Antivirus tests. Norton 2009 scored a total of 46 out of 50 points when compared to the other Antivirus 2009 programs we tested. AV Comparatives is a reputable independent Antivirus testing lab in Austria. • ICSA Labs Certified. ICSA is an independent organization that sets standards for security products and certifies anti-virus software. • West Coast Labs' Checkmark Anti-Virus Desktop Certification. WCL specializes in functionality testing, performance validation and Checkmark Certification of security products. • Virus Bulletin's VB 100% Certified. The VB 100% award is given to antivirus software that detects all viruses "in the wild." 6) Help & Support:   Norton offers both free Email and Chat support and also limited free Phone support. Norton's support website is easy to use and full of common software problems. Adequate support is always a challenge for large companies, however, Norton does a good job of it with a seemingly new focus on customer support over the last year. We tested their support system, and within 7 minutes we were chatting to a Symantec technician, who then remotely took control of our computer (with permission) and quickly solved the problem. Email support is usually answered in less than 24 hours, and Symantec also offers limited free Phone Support. CONCLUSION: Norton Antivirus 2009 is a dramatic improvement over previous versions. Norton's old versions were known to be computer resource hogs in the Tech community. However, Norton has addressed these concerns with their 2009 version - its Performance is unmatched compared to any of its competitors. Norton Antivirus 2009 is ideal for computer novices and intermediates - for more advanced users we would recommend Norton Internet Security instead since it includes Firewall, AntiSpam, and many other features not included in Norton Antivirus. Norton Internet Security is also able to be used on 3 computers, unlike Norton Antivirus which is only good for one installation.
