Review of Kaspersky Internet Security 2011By Jay Andrew Allen
Last year's version of Kaspersky Internet Security brought with it a ton of great features above and beyond the usual malware protections. The latest version, Kaspersky Internet Security 2011, builds on last year's version with the addition of Safe Surf, Geo Filter, and Idle Scan. Plus, existing features such as System Watcher, Safe Run, and Parental Control have also been expanded.1) Features & Ease of Use: 13/15 The Kaspersky Dashboard uses the same interface as Kaspersky AntiVirus, although that UI is packed with many more options. The Dashboard is well organized, although several aspects of it are a touch confusing. A green button at the top indicated that our computer was protected and up-to-date. However, clicking on the button produced a Status window that warned us we had two unfinished action items: updating our virus definition database (which Kaspersky was already doing automatically), and training Kaspersky's Anti-Spam e-mail filter by supplying it with 50 non-spam e-mail examples. ![]() View Larger Kaspersky Screenshots New Features: A new scan option, Idle Scan, is enabled by default and runs a system-wide virus scan whenever the screen saver has been on for more than five minutes, or when the user has locked the computer.
The System Watcher - Kaspersky's name for its real-time monitoring technology - has been enhanced to record the activities of systems applications so that the destructive actions of a malicious app can be rolled back. The Geo Filter feature, which is hidden underneath Settings->Web Anti-Virus->Settings->Geo Filter, ranks country domains according to the amount of malware that originates from those locations, and enables blocking Web content from the country's entire domain. Finally, Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 is available not only through its System Tray icon, but as a Sidebar Gadget on Windows Vista and Windows 7 machines. Other Key Features: The advanced features of Kaspersky Internet Security are easy to access and understand. Safe Run provides a safe execution environment - a sandbox - in which to run potentially malicious applications, such as applications whose publisher can't be verified. Kaspersky also provides Safe Surf, a.k.a. Safe Run for Websites, and a Virtual Keyboard that can be used to keep sensitive personal and financial data out of the hands of keystroke-logging applications. While these features are great ideas, it should be noted that Avast! Antivirus provides these same features for half the cost.
But Kaspersky Internet Security has a few other tricks up its sleeve, including a flexible Parental Controls feature. With Parental Controls, parents can place any number of password-protected restrictions they desire on any account on the current machine. Controls include: total amount of time spent logged in; which applications can be accessed; whether Web sites belonging to certain categories (such as pornography and gambling) should be blocked; whether chat/IM usage should be curtailed; and even whether certain words should be monitored in IM conversations. Kaspersky also features an ad blocker, called Anti-Banner. Sadly, this feature isn't enabled by default. Fortunately, it only takes a mouse click to activate it! Firewall: Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 ships with its own firewall technology, and sports a nice configuration interface that groups sites according to their trust level. Unfortunately, on our test machines, the Firewall Settings dialog proved hard to use due to its sluggish performance.
2) Virus Scanner: 4/5 Kaspersky Internet Security supports a Full Scan, a Critical Areas Scan (a scan of the areas of your system most commonly infected), and an Idle Scan that activates whenever your computer is locked or the screensaver is active. The Scan window in KIS also features a "target" icon on which users can drop a file or folder for an individual scan of suspicious files - a very handy feature supported by few other anti-virus platforms. ![]() View Larger Kaspersky Screenshots Speed: On our reference machine*, Kaspersky managed to complete a scan of our 1GB test file matrix in 37.5 seconds, for a scan speed of 27.3 MB per second. This is reasonable, though nowhere near the top of the pack. However, in our Subsequent Scans test, Kaspersky proved to have the second highest scan speed across a battery of 10 scans. Updates: Kaspersky does a solid job keeping its virus database fresh: the platform updates its virus database definitions an average of 12.5 times daily. *Reference Computer: Windows 7 Home Premium running on a Toshiba Pentium Dual-Core T4200 (64 bit), with 3GB of RAM and a 210GB hard drive. 3) Performance Testing: 6.5/10 Kaspersky Internet Security 2011's results of our in-house Performance Testing show above average results. See full results below.
4) Effectiveness: (Virus/Malware Detection) 12.5/15 ![]() 5) Help & Support: 3/5 » » » CONCLUSION:
Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 runs on most systems with a light footprint and minimal system impact. Its almost overwhelming cadre of enhanced features - including Safe Surf, Parental Controls, and Anti-Banner - leave no doubt that users who upgrade from Kaspersky AntiVirus are getting their money's worth. Overall Kaspersky is one of the best Internet Security programs we reviewed this year.
