Review of Kaspersky Antivirus 2009:
1) Installation: Kaspersky 2009 installed in 3 minutes, but it did require one system restart after installation. The installation process was not as straight-forward as other antivirus programs, such as Norton AntiVirus which installed in under 1 minute and required no reboots and less user involvement to install than Kaspersky did. However, the installation process only took a few minutes so we're not about to write off a program simply because its installation process could use a little work. 2) Features & Ease of Use: Kaspersky has a very good set of antivirus features and options (although at times its options seem like a maze going in circles). Our main concern is that it doesn't offer the most informative set of user-messages and confirmation screens. When performing a Virus Scan there wasn't any Confirmation Screen after the scan was complete. This can confuse users since they might not know if the scan is complete or even if a scan was performed at all. Kaspersky protects against Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Spyware, and Adware like most other antivirus programs. 3) Virus Scanner: Kaspersky AntiVirus has been known for being one of the fastest scanning and least obtrusive antivirus programs for years, and this year is no exception. Kaspersky has both a Quick Scan as well as a Full Scan option. On our test computer with 70GB of used space on its hard-drive it took Kaspersky just over 2 minutes to perform its Quick Scan, while the Full System Scan took 47 minutes. This was the 2nd fastest scan time, and slightly better than Norton, which took 24 seconds and 49 minutes respectively. Updates: The 2009 version of Kaspersky updates about every hour (our testing averaged every 21 updates per day), which is good, but not the most up-to-date protection in the industry anymore with Norton now updating every 5-15 minutes with its new Pulse Update feature. However, Kaspersky is still the top-rated program with its response time to new viruses. Kaspersky takes less than 2 hours on average to respond to new threats, while most other antivirus programs take 4-8 hours. 4) System Resource Usage:
5) Effectiveness: ![]() 6) Help & Support: Kaspersky is the industry leader with its support & help system. Its Help Files within the program are very useful and well laid out, and if you require further assistance you can call their toll-free support phone, email them, or browse their user forums or their Online Knowledge Base. CONCLUSION: Kaspersky has been the top-rated antivirus program the previous two years, however, their 2009 version fell short of expectations. The installation process isn't as smooth as it could be, its user-messages and confirmation screens are ambiguous, and its System Resource Usage fails to impress like in previous years (barely Above Average). For Kaspersky enthusiasts there isn't any reason to jump ships just yet, and despite these small drawbacks it is still one of the top antivirus programs available.
