Review of F-Secure AntiVirus 2011:     By Jay Andrew Allen F-Secure AntiVirus 2011 boasts one of the prettiest and intuitive interfaces of all of the antivirus products we've tested this year. But will its Features, Performance, and Effectiveness be good enough to finally propel F-Secure into the top ranks of antivirus software? Read on to find out if F-Secure 2011 makes the cut. 1) Installation:  4/5 Installation of F-Secure AntiVirus 2011 on our reference system* was relatively painless. While installation did take 2 minutes and 26 seconds, that included downloading the latest edition of the software. F-Secure displays about five dialog windows before the installation process itself launches. (See Installation Time Comparison Graph) *Reference Computer: Windows 7 Home Premium running on a Toshiba Pentium Dual-Core T4200, with 3GB of RAM and a 210GB hard drive. 2) Features & Ease of Use:  6.5/10 F-Secure provides a slick Dashboard interface with a simple organizational scheme. A large green check button tells you that the program has verified the security of your system. Three large buttons provide access to the most important elements of the application: Status displays the list of current anti-virus protections; Tasks provides access to antivirus features such as virus scanning; and Statistics displays a detailed report on the security status of your system, including a running total of all viruses and malware discovered to date. F-Secure 2011 Dashboard: View Larger F-Secure Screenshots F-Secure's available features mostly focus on core antivirus protections. A feature called DeepGuard provides real-time protection against suspicious applications that may contain previously undetected viruses. By default, F-Secure enrolls users in the Real Time Protection Network, which disseminates knowledge of newly discovered viruses and malware that have been reported by other F-Secure users. The platform offers little in the way of advanced features. Like most commercial antivirus platforms, F-Secure supports scanning not only local hard drives, but removable media such as CD-ROMs and USB thumb drives. One notable missing feature, however, is Full Screen Mode, or "Gamer Mode," which pauses antivirus scanning if an application (such as a video game or a movie player) is running full screen. F-Secure also provides a couple of free tools online, including F-Secure Health Check. Discovering these tools involves going to the F-Secure Labs page and scrolling to the bottom of the screen. In our opinion, these could be better integrated into the product. 3) Virus Scanner:  3/5 F-Secure supports running both a Full Scan and a Quick Scan (called the Virus and Spyware Scan). Users can also limit scans to specific drives, sub-folders, and removable media devices. F-Secure's DeepGuard technology provides additional zero-day protection from previously unknown intruders. F-Secure Virus Scanner: View Larger F-Secure Screenshots Speed: On our reference machine (see above), F-Secure scanned an average of 23.1MB per second, which is just below average when compared with other antivirus applications. (See Scan Speed Comparison Graph) Updates: F-Secure AntiVirus 2011 performs an above-average number of virus definition updates, refreshing its database about 9.5 times every day. (See Updates Per Day Comparison Graph) 4) Performance Testing:  4/10 A good antivirus program should not only protect your computer from viruses but also not slow down the Performance of your computer too much by using up your computer's resources. We run each antivirus program through a set of Performance Tests to see the impact it has on the computer. View the results below of our antivirus testing for F-Secure 2011... • Memory Use: F-Secure 2011 uses 42.6 MB of system memory. #13 ranked program of the 15 antivirus programs we tested. • Reboot Time: F-Secure added 15.6 seconds to our test computer's reboot time. #6 ranked program. • Installation Size: F-Secure AntiVirus 2011 requires 682 MB of hard-drive space for installation. #15 ranked program. • Initial Scan Speed: F-Secure AntiVirus scans files the first time at a speed of 23.1 MB/s. #10 ranked program. • Subsequent Scan Speed: F-Secure performs subsequent scans at a speed of 269.5 MB/s. #2 ranked program. • Initial Application Launch: F-Secure 2011 added 0.350s to launch a web browser for the first time after a reboot. #7 ranked program. • Subsequent Application Launch: F-Secure added 0.430s on average for subsequent web browser launches. #14 ranked program. • File Conversion Time: F-Secure added 0.48s on average to convert a MP3 file to four other file types. #8 ranked program. • System Impact Score: The "System Impact Score" is a comparative score tallied from the above 8 Antivirus tests. F-Secure 2011 only scored a total of 53 out of 120 points when compared to the other antivirus programs tested. This ranked F-Secure 2011 as the #12 rated (tie) antivirus program we tested this year. Unfortunately, for the second straight year F-Secure finished near the bottom of our Performance Tests. • View graphs of the above Antivirus Performance Tests. 5) Effectiveness: (Virus/Malware Detection)  14/15 The most important function of an antivirus program is to keep your computer free from Viruses and other Malware. Below we'll take a look at some of the industry's top Virus/Malware Detection testing and certification. a) AV Comparatives is an independent testing lab in Austria providing some of the most trusted virus detection tests in the industry. F-Secure received AV-Comparatives' Product of the Year award for 2010 after finishing better than any other antivirus program in the tests throughout 2010. Great results for F-Secure, and shows how much they've improved in a short period of time. b) AV-Test is another major antivirus testing lab which is located in Germany. In their recent antivirus testing in 2010, F-Secure received a 15.5 / 18 score on the Windows 7 platform. In the 2nd set of tests run on Windows XP, F-Secure received a 15.5 / 18 score. While on the 3rd test run on Windows Vista, F-Secure received a 16 / 18 score. All 3 of these scores were good enough to receive AV-Test's Certification level (12 points needed on each test for Certification). Overall, F-Secure was one of the top programs tested in these 3 tests. Despite these tests being run on F-Secure's Internet Security software, they are useful when evaluating F-Secure's more basic antivirus program since they test the software's Protection and Repair capabilities against Viruses and Malware. Win 7: Win XP: Win Vista:         c) ICSA Labs - NOT Certified. ICSA is an independent organization that sets standards for security products and certifies anti-virus software. d) Virus Bulletin's VB 100% Certified. F-Secure passed the most recent VB100 test (Dec./10), and has passed the last 13 tests dating back to October 2008. The VB 100% award is given to antivirus software that detects all viruses "in the wild." e) West Coast Labs - NOT Certified. WCL specializes in functionality testing, performance validation and Checkmark Certification of security products. 6) Help & Support:  3/5 »Inline Help: The text on dialogs is simple and helpful. The only thing that could make F-Secure more useful would be direct links into the Help system for terms specific to F-Secure, such as DeepGuard. »Local Help: F-Secure includes a local Help file, but it's something of a mess. The Index didn't work in our version, and Search often put what seemed like the most relevant information at the bottom of the results list. »Online Support: F-Secure offers support through Web-based service requests, live chat, and a 24-hour phone hot line. »Quick Support Links:      • Support Home Page      • Live Chat Support      • Phone Support      • Log a Support Request CONCLUSION: While F-Secure 2011 suffers from below-average performance and a lack of high-end features, it has proven itself this year by taking home AV-Comparatives coveted Product of the Year award due to its unparalleled Effectiveness against viruses and malware. Despite its few short-comings, F-Secure has secured a Good overall rating from us this year. A great accomplishment considering its Average rating last year.
