Review of AVG Internet Security 2011:By Jay Andrew Allen
For years, AVG has been the leading name in free antivirus software. In the past 10 years, its producer, AVG Technologies, has used a combination of innovations and acquisitions to grow AVG into a multi-product platform. AVG Internet Security 2011 builds on its prior releases with enhanced identity theft protection, a fortified firewall, and built-in protection for social networking fanatics.1) Features & Ease of Use: 8.5/15 Dashboard: The AVG Internet Security Dashboard is an interesting mix of helpful and useless. The main content area displays a list of 17 installed features. Double-clicking on each feature displays a page for the feature. Some of these pages are nothing but a description: e.g., the Anti-Virus page displays a handful of statistics about when the virus definition database was last updated. By contrast, clicking the Firewall button displays the configuration options for the local firewall. The result is a confusing shell game that leaves users guessing which buttons hide useful options. What's more problematic is that AVG Internet Security can't seem to decide on a unified navigation scheme for commands. AVG can be commended for placing prominent Scan Now and Update Now links in the left hand navigation bar. But other critical options, such as Advanced Settings and Advanced Firewall Settings, are hidden away in the menu bar, under Tools. ![]() View Larger AVG Screenshots Features:
AVG Internet Security provides most - but not all - of the features users would expect from an Internet Security product. Outside of traditional anti-virus and anti-spam functions, the application provides several components that keep users safe while Web surfing. LinkScanner offers protection against malicious Web sites in the form of Surf-Shield and Search-Shield, which block users from potentially dangerous URLs launched in Internet Explorer or Firefox. (Like most 2011 Internet Security products, AVG provides no support for Google Chrome.) Online Shield ensures the safety of file downloads via the Web or over Instant Messaging (IM) applications. Finally, Identity Protection monitors for potential malware that sniffs passwords, bank account numbers, and other sensitive personal data.
Like many of its rivals, AVG verifies that links on social networks are safe - ensuring your Facebook wall doesn't contain malicious links. Another common feature is AVG's low-consumption mode when you're working on your computer, thus not slowing down your productivity. A few of AVG's features require additional purchases. PC Analyzer examines a user's PC for potential performance issues, but won't fix anything. Users can download and use AVG PC Tuneup once to fix the problems identified by PC Analyzer, or purchase 12 months of unlimited tuneups for $29.99. AVG LiveKive supplies online data backup and recovery. 25GB/year of online storage runs for $49.99, or users can purchase unlimited storage for 12 months for $79.99. But the most disappointing pay-for-play feature is Parental Controls. Most Internet Security platforms offer Parental Controls as an integrated part of their software. AVG requires that users purchase a separate annual subscription for Parental Controls. As of this writing, AVG has reduced the annual cost of this "extra" feature from $19.99/year to $0.99/year. Which raises the question: why not simply include the feature with AVG Internet Security, instead of charging a yearly pittance? Finally, while most end users won't be able to make heads or tails of the System Tools page, computer geeks will realize that AVG has given those who know their way around Windows a powerful housecleaning tool. System Tools display every process, network connection, networked Layered Service Provider (LSP), startup application, and browser extension running on the system. Firewall:
AVG's Firewall is rich, but verbose. It provides five basic levels of protection: Small office or home network (the default), Computer within domain, Directly connected to the Internet, Block All, and Allow All. Users can tinker with these defaults in the Advanced Options dialog, adding and removing rules for specific applications and network layers. AVG even supports duplicating and modifying an existing firewall profile. In reality, most users won't bother with such customizations; they'll be more distracted by the numerous pop-ups displayed by AVG asking if various applications should be authorized to access the Internet.
2) Virus Scanner: 4/5 Scan Types: AVG supports three basic scan types: Whole Computer Scan, Scan Specific Files or Folders, and an Anti-Rootkit Scan. Users can adjust the amount of processor time used by the scanner with the User Sensitivity slider at the bottom of the Scan page. ![]() View Larger AVG Screenshots Speed: AVG's a speed demon! On our reference machine*, AVG tore through our 1GB test matrix in 28.7 seconds. That's 35.7MB per second, making AVG Internet Security the second fastest IS product we've tested this year (only ESET Smart Security 4.2 bested it). AVG lost a bit of steam in our Subsequent Scan Speed test, but still managed to place 4th overall. Updates: AVG Internet Security 2011 downloads a middling 7 virus definition updates per day. *Reference Computer: Windows 7 Home Premium running on a Toshiba Pentium Dual-Core T4200 (64 bit), with 3GB of RAM and a 210GB hard drive. 3) Performance Testing: 6.5/10
4) Effectiveness: (Virus/Malware Detection) 11/15 ![]() 5) Help & Support: 4/5 » » » » Support Home (lists all support options) Product Support Home Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Premium Support CONCLUSION:
AVG Internet Security 2011 can't brag that it has the best interface, or the greatest repository of features. What it does have is a wicked-fast virus scanning engine, a solid record of effectiveness against malware, and an all-around focus on system performance that outshines most competitors. In our intensive performance tests, AVG Internet Security finished 5th out of 15 products in terms of overall system impact. Intermediate and advanced computer users are the ones most likely to appreciate AVG's speed, effectiveness, and advanced configuration options.
